Junior-high school student Miaka Yūki is under a lot of pressure to pass the entrance exam for the competitive Jonan Academy. Her best friend, Yui Hongo, agrees to apply for the same school so they can go together. While at the library one day, Miaka and Yui enter a restricted section and finds a strange book lying on the floor, The Universe of the Four Gods. When they open the book, a warning tells them that whoever reads it will become the protagonists in the book, but they continue reading and are sucked into the book. They are attacked by slave traders, but saved by Tamahome, a man with the Chinese character for "ogre" (鬼, oni?) written on his forehead. The two girls are then returned to the book. When Miaka has a fight with her mom, she runs away from home and goes back into the book in the library.
